Alpacas are a domesticated mammal in the same family as camels, and they originate in the Andes of southern Peru, northern Bolivia, Ecuador, and northern Chile. There are approximately 3.5 million Alpacas in the Andean highlands!
They resemble a small llama in appearance and their wool is very soft and warm. Alpacas are smaller than llamas, weighing on average of 125 to 175 pounds and standing 34 to 36 inches at the shoulders. They have long necks but no humps. Alpaca wool is used for blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide variety of textiles and ponchos in South America, and sweaters, socks, coats and bedding all around the world. Alpacas were domesticated thousands of years ago by the Moche people of northern Peru.
Contrary to what most people think, Alpacas do not have hooves, Rather, they have padded feet with two toes on each foot. They subsist mainly on grass, hay and grain, which they digest with their three stomachs. Alpacas will spit when they are angry and call their young by making a humming noise.
Alpacas are often bred for a specific colour of fleece, and the most common shades are black, silver, gray, white, brown and fawn. They are normally sheared once a year, preferably in the early summer.
The British Alpaca Society governs and monitors a high standard of Alpaca breeding in the United Kingdom. Alpaca breeders can use the Pedigree Registry to check bloodlines, breeding records and therefore make informed mating decisions based on sound information and established pedigree.
If you are looking to buy an alpaca, there are some things to keep in mind to ensure that you are choosing a quality specimen. Always remember to choose a sound and healthy alpaca, because it is easier to breed in better wool traits than it is to breed out health problems or genetic defects. An alpaca needs to be in good health to live a long and productive life.
Be wary of abnormally tall females, as these have been known to have reproductive problems. You can take a closer look at the breeding records of the alpaca you are considering if you are not sure. Short animals should also raise a red flag, because their stunted growth may be due to dwarfism, or may simply be a result of poor nutrition.
A healthy alpaca will have a short muzzle, triangular shaped symmetrical head, an even jaw and bite, erect and spear-shaped ears, and bright and alert eyes. A hump on the back, crooked legs, or disproportionate body size in comparison to legs and neck are signs of an unhealthy or poorly bred alpaca.
Of course, no animal can be perfect, but you can carefully weigh the negative and positive attributes to decide which alpaca is best for you and your breeding needs.
These gorgeous creatures need lots of care and attention, and owning and breeding alpacas can be very fascinating and rewarding!
